Project Details

The First Unitarian Church of Oakland required seismically upgrading two-thirds of the entire historic building within the property. One third of the building had to be demolished while not disturbing the remainder of the building. A new 3 story, wood frame building was added between the existing building parts. Great care and coordination was taken to assure that finish floor elevations matched and existing historic finishes flowed together. Seismic work entailed intensive roof shoring, doweling, and shotcreting. The existing roof structure was shored to remove an upper brick wall. Interior concrete walls were incorporated to strengthen existing walls and a ledger was added. Then, the historic roof structure was reattached. All historic wood interior finishes were restored. Stone was delivered from Canada to match the existing architecture. A commercial kitchen was added.
