On December 12th, Overaa Construction attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the recently completed the $50M Central Bay Operations and Maintenance Facility. The new 28,000 SF, four-story building is located on the Alameda Point Shoreline, and is the home for Water Emergency Transportation Authority’s (WETA) Central San Francisco Bay Ferry Fleet. The idea of the new WETA facility grew out of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake when a section of the Bay Bridge collapsed cutting off San Francisco from the East Bay. The facility has 12 berths for San Francisco Ferry boats to be refueled and maintained. However, in case of a major disaster the building would serve as an Emergency Operation Center, moving first responders to where they need to be as well as helping to evacuate stranded residents from one side of the Bay to the other. In addition, the facility supports light repair and maintenance work, spare parts storage, concession supply, administrative office space, records storage, and deliveries. It also includes a diesel fuel facility with a storage capacity of 45,000 gallons. The waterside work included dredging, marine piles, marine floats and berthing facility, and the seawall. The building was designed to be LEED Gold Certified.
