U.C. Berkeley Parking Structure Receives Highest Honor
6/2/2009
A unique parking structure built by U.C. Berkeley was recently recognized as the top project in North America. Located two blocks south of the main campus, Underhill is a 1,000 space, 380,000sf, 4-level parking facility with 2 floors below ground. A spacious 77,400sf multisport recreational field and running track serves as the facility's rooftop. The garage and field, which fit unobtrusively into the Berkeley cityscape, received the 2009 Award of Excellence from the International Parking Institute, the organization’s highest honor. In addition, Underhill received Honorary Mention for Architecture in the competition.
The structure was completed in 2007 and is located on College Avenue between Channing Way and Haste Street, a site which formerly hosted a parking structure damaged by the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989. Initially the site was an open parking lot whose grade level was 30+ feet below the sidewalk. The design-build team included Overaa Construction (Richmond), Walker Parking Consultants (San Francisco) and Stantec Architecture (San Francisco).
The recreation field integrates generous open green space with a surrounding environment of densely-populated dormitories and apartment buildings. Spacious public walkways with ample seating help the facility function as a social hub. The project team worked closely with the University to ensure Underhill would be environmentally-friendly. Underhill was designed to meet all possible LEED guidelines for an open parking structure, earning 18 points from the U.S. Green Building Council. |
